Tsuga canadensis IDed by bark, pine cones, and its short needles whose stems are snug against the twig.
American Sycamore Dried Leaves
Leaf of a Plantanus occidentalis found at the base of a small hill. IDed by distinct plane-tree-esque shape. Though London plane trees have similar leaves, this is definitely a sycamore’s: the closest plane tree (i.e. the tree this leaf probably came from) is the one photographed below, and it has outer bark at the trunk and gleaning white inner bark near the crown — a sycamore for sure.
Privet (icid)
[Incomplete ID] May be Ligustrum ovalifolium based on leaves. Have yet to verify buds.
Norway Spruce
Picea abies IDed by the shape of the tree, overall appearance, and by the needles all around the twig. Also cones!
Hinoki cypress (??)
Chamaecyparis obtusa IDed by bark and scaly Cypress like foliage (hinoki is a false cypress). Returned in the day to get better photos.
American Basswood (??)
Tilia americana IDed by buds. Could be little leaf linden, but most lindens buds have started to open already and these ones have not. (Post date is accurate)
Golden Raintree
Koelreuteria paniculata IDed by seed pods. (Post date is accurate)
Row of European Hornbeams
Carpinus betulus IDed by smooth muscle-like bark (alt. name musclewood), plus curved buds lying against twig. (Post date is accurate)
Tree Finding #2
Sometime in the winter I went out of my way to find trees that I couldn’t ID. For most of the trees I photographed, I have yet to find time to sit down and figure out their species. But, since spring is coming quick and I don’t want to be posting winter IDs in the middle of spring for the sake of my own sanity, I think I’m just going to put them in these “tree finding” post and hope with my fingers crossed that I will eventually find the time to ID them and won’t just forget about them.
